The Story of The Venetian

About

The Venetian Hotel History

Welcome to The Venetian, where art and history stroll hand in hand with exhilaration and excitement.

Completed in 1999, The Venetian was envisioned as a tribute to the famed city of Venice, Italy, location of the honeymoon of Mr. Sheldon and Dr. Miriam Adelson. To recreate the city’s landmarks – as well as its charm – artists, architects, and experts conducted extensive research in Venice to ensure that every last detail of The Venetian was faithful to the original.

To achieve that goal, authentic materials were imported and talented artisans commissioned to bring Venice to Vegas. Verde St. Denis, a green stone found in the Italian Alps is used throughout the resort. The 25-foot-high columns that line the main colonnade are solid Botticino marble. The frescoes that adorn the ceilings were hand painted by Italian artists. And the three-dimensional pattern on the floor in the colonnade was hand fitted with Italian marble to perfectly replicate the floor of the Church of Santa Maria del Rosario.

It’s this attention to detail that has made The Venetian such a remarkable wonder of art and architecture. We invite you to explore the treasures of The Venetian and marvel at our homage to one of the world’s most unique and truly great cities.

To recreate a modern-day Venice, Italy's landmarks, artists, architects, and experts conducted extensive research to ensure that every detail at The Venetian was faithful to the original. The essence of Old-world Venice, including original Baroqueinspired murals, trompe l'oeil ornament, and decorative finishes covering approximately 50,000 square feet of ceilings and walls throughout the hotel, as well as the design, construction, and gilding was replicated with great accuracy. Authentic materials were imported and talented artisans commissioned to bring Venice to Vegas. Verde St. Denis, a green stone found in the Italian Alps is used throughout the resort. The 25-foot columns that line the Grand Colonnade are solid Botticino marble and the remainder of the marble comes from quarries in Italy. The frescoes that adorn the ceilings were canvases painted by Italian artists, applied to the interior of the domed vault and edges were blended for a seamless transition between the pictures. The Colonnade was hand fitted with Italian marble to perfectly replicate the three-dimensional pattern on the floor of the Church of Santa Maria del Rosario. And that is just a hint of the effort that went into creating Venice in Las Vegas. If you’d like to learn more, please speak with the concierge about available tours.
