The Green Initiative

The Palazzo, The Venetian, Meetings and Convention Space

Our goal at The Venetian, The Palazzo, and the Sands Expo and Convention Center is to be the largest green campus in the world and continue to make a spectacular impact on the environment. We have made a significant investment of time, funds, and research to do everything possible to do our part to help the environment and make Las Vegas a better place to live, work, and visit.

The Palazzo is already the largest LEED-certified building in the world. The link below contains more information on The Palazzo LEED certification and our entire green brochure to download: http://www.palazzolasvegas.com/greenpalazzo.aspx.

Our commitment to the environment is already making a significant difference. The points below highlight the efforts we have made in Las Vegas, property-wide, to ensure each meeting, convention, and visit is successful, enjoyable, and environmentally friendly.

Recycling

  • During the construction of The Palazzo, some 70 percent of waste materials were recycled, diverting nearly 42,000 tons from the landfill.
  • The Venetian utilizes a Combs Brothers recycling program. 430 tons of cardboard, metal, glass, aluminum, plastic, and paper were recycled January-July, 2008.
  • Sands Expo has recently partnered with Lunas Materials Recovery Facility for waste management, successfully turning 75 percent into recycled materials.
  • Sands Expo is a member of MaxPerks Recycling Program, a program that collects and recycles ink cartridges, toner cartridges, and old cell phone batteries.
  • Sands Expo is a partner with Nevada Recycling. They recycle copper, aluminum, brass and heavy metals, and electrical cords. Last year, Nevada Recycling recycled over 2,000 pounds of cords for the Sands Expo.
  • Recycle bins are available throughout the Sands Expo.
  • 158 tons recycled at The Venetian Loading Dock in the first quarter of 2008.

Energy

  • Over 700,000 total watts were saved between 2007 and the present by utilizing energy-saving lamps and energy-saving motion detectors throughout The Venetian.
  • Solar panels installed on the shared parking garage for The Venetian and The Palazzo as well at the Sands Expo. This energy heats all water for the pools.
  • LED lighting in the ceiling coves of Levels 2, 3, 4, 5 in the Congress Center and The Palazzo Ballroom.
  • Eco-friendly florescent lighting in the coves of The Venetian Ballroom and Level 1 meeting space of The Venetian.
  • Lighting is lowered for move in/out and turned off when meeting space is empty.
  • 50 percent of the escalators in the Congress Center from Level 1 to 5 are turned off overnight.
  • Convention facilities utilize electric-powered carts and lifts.
  • Dimmers installed in convention halls that resulted in a 24 percent energy savings.
  • Over 10.6 million kWh conserved annually at The Palazzo; enough to power more than 700 homes a year.
  • The million plus square feet of convention space operates on a security lighting setting (the safety minimum) during non-event days. For move in/out days, it operates at 50 percent lighting. 100 percent lighting is only utilized on show days.
  • Heating and air conditioning are only used when needed in the convention center, reducing the amount of vents functioning during non-event days.

Water

  • An advanced cooling tower water treatment system is utilized property wide and is estimated to conserve more than 40 million gallons per year.
  • Early morning watering of outdoor plants is a Standard Operating Procedure.
  • Dishwashers are only run when full and are not overloaded.
  • Low-flush toilets in restrooms, infrared sensors, and faucet aeration on all sinks.
  • Outside is kept clean with manual sweeping instead of hosing and electric sweeping.

Air Quality

  • Close monitoring and maintenance of air quality within the Sands Expo.

Cleaning Products

  • Eco-safe chemicals are utilized where possible in the convention facilities.
  • EPA-certified hand soap, hand towels, and tissues are used.
  • Cleaning crews in the convention facilities use a non-toxic cleaner designed to minimize pollution and human exposure to toxic compounds for floors, windows, carpets, trash cans, toilets, sinks, railings, and counters.
